A dramatic scene reportedly unfolded at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) after a lecturer allegedly destroyed an architecture student’s project, accusing him of not being capable of producing such an impressive design.

According to eyewitnesses, the student had presented his final-year project — an architectural model that showcased creativity and innovation — only for the lecturer to question the authenticity of the work. The lecturer allegedly claimed the design was “too good” to have been created by the student and proceeded to damage the project in anger.

The incident has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among students and netizens who described the act as “academic bullying” and “an abuse of power.”

One student witness said, “The guy worked on that project for months. Seeing his effort destroyed like that was heartbreaking. Even if the lecturer doubted him, there are better ways to verify.”

Meanwhile, calls are growing for the school management to investigate the lecturer’s actions and ensure fairness for the affected student. Many Nigerians on social media have also demanded reforms in the way lecturers handle student assessments, citing this as another example of toxic academic culture in some institutions.

As of the time of this report, FUTO authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
