In a landmark policy change, the Federal Ministry of Education has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for Arts and Humanities students seeking admission into universities and polytechnics across Nigeria.
According to the new National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, Arts students will now be admitted based on relevant subjects to their chosen field of study — while English Language remains compulsory for all candidates.
The Ministry explained that the decision aims to make tertiary education more inclusive and to ensure that students are evaluated based on subjects most relevant to their disciplines.
However, Mathematics will remain mandatory for applicants in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Social Science programmes.
This policy takes effect immediately and will be reflected in the next admission cycle handled by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
