Abuja, October 1, 2025 — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the grim toll following a boat accident on the Niger River in Kogi State’s Ibaji area: 24 people rescued alive, 14 bodies recovered, and 42 still missing.
According to NEMA’s statement, search and rescue operations are ongoing as teams continue to scour the waters for survivors or additional casualties.
The accident, which occurred as travelers—many of them traders—were crossing to a market in neighboring Edo State, underscores ongoing concerns about river transport safety in Nigeria.
Kogi State authorities have expressed deep sorrow over the loss and pledged to coordinate with federal bodies to intensify waterway safety measures, especially during the rainy season when flooding and strong currents raise the risks.
