The President described the award as a mark of respect for their enduring legacies and commitment to justice, peace, and the development of the Ogoni people. According to Tinubu, their sacrifices remain an important reminder of the need for national unity, equity, and reconciliation.

The posthumous awards also symbolize the government’s renewed pledge to heal historical wounds and to honor those whose lives were cut short in the struggle for fairness and inclusion in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
