BREAKING NEWS: UI Crowned Nigeria’s No. 1 in 2026 World University Rankings

 In a landmark development for Nigerian higher education, the University of Ibadan (UI) has been officially ranked as the top university in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, reclaiming a position it last held in 2023. 

🏛️ Key Highlights

• UI was placed in the 801–1,000 global band for the 2026 edition, after rising from its 2025 ranking of fourth among Nigerian universities.  
• The institution dethroned Covenant University (CU), which had held the top Nigerian spot in 2024 and 2025.  
• In the national ranking that followed UI are:
   – University of Lagos (UNILAG) in 2nd place 
   – Bayero University, Kano (BUK) in 3rd 
   – Covenant University (CU) in 4th  

📊 What Went Into the Ranking

THE’s 2026 rankings assessed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, using 18 performance indicators grouped into five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry partnership, and international outlook. 

Some differentiated performances among Nigerian universities:

• UNILAG posted the highest score in research quality, with a metric of 66.7 points.  
• BUK was the top-performing Nigerian university in international outlook.  
• Covenant University led in industry engagement among Nigerian institutions.  

Among the 51 Nigerian universities featured in the THE 2026 ranking:

• Only UI and UNILAG appear in the 801–1,000 global band.  
• BUK, CU, and Landmark University fall within the 1,001–1,200 band.  
• Some other noted universities—Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria (UNN), University of Jos, and Federal University of Technology, Minna—are ranked in the 1,201–1,500 global range.
