A section of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt, the state capital, was engulfed by fire on Tuesday evening, sending panic among workers and residents in the area.
Eyewitnesses say the fire broke out in one of the blocks within the complex, destroying several offices and important documents before emergency services arrived. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the affected building as firefighters battled to bring the situation under control.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, preliminary reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported at the time of this report.
Security operatives and officials of the Rivers State Fire Service were on ground to prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the complex.
Authorities are expected to commence an investigation to determine the cause of the incident and assess the extent of damage.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over the safety of public infrastructure across the country, where fire outbreaks have become increasingly frequent due to poor maintenance and outdated electrical systems.
