Abuja, Nigeria — September 1, 2025 — The Federal Government of Nigeria will launch a new policy initiative to begin labelling genetically modified (GM) food products, aiming to enhance transparency and empower consumer choice across the nation.
Labelling Initiative Backed by Authorities
In a collaborative effort, the Ministry of Health, National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have pledged to implement clear labelling standards for GMO foods. This move aligns with international best practices and is intended to foster public trust in biotechnology.
Regulatory Framework and Safety Assurance
At a recent biotech and biosafety workshop in Abuja, Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using biotechnology safely and ethically. He insisted that GM and non-GM foods would be regulated rigorously, and that labelling is crucial to maintaining transparency and consumer trust.
Similarly, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized that GMO foods are not inherently harmful—but only when they pass safety assessments. She said proper labelling would enable informed consumer decisions and foster accountability among marketers.
Progress Toward Unified Action
Officials have recognized the need for a coordinated response. A technical working group involving NBMA and NAFDAC has been proposed to standardize risk assessments, certification processes, and labelling practices—ensuring cohesive and scientifically sound regulation.
