In a shocking development on Tuesday evening, chaos erupted on Lagos Island as journalists covering the raging fire incident at a commercial building came under violent attack. The reporters, who had arrived at the scene to document the unfolding tragedy and provide live updates to the public, were reportedly harassed, beaten, and had their equipment vandalized by unidentified individuals.
Eyewitnesses said the fire, which broke out in the heart of Lagos Island, had already drawn a large crowd of traders, residents, and emergency responders when tempers flared. As journalists attempted to capture footage and interview those affected, some individuals allegedly became hostile, accusing the media of “exploiting the tragedy” and “getting in the way” of rescue operations. Within minutes, the situation escalated into a mob-like confrontation that left several reporters injured.
One affected journalist, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the ordeal as terrifying: “We came here to do our job, to inform the public about the fire and the damages. Suddenly, a group of men started shouting at us and before we knew it, they pounced, seizing our cameras and threatening us with weapons. We had to run for our lives.”
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which was already battling to contain the inferno, condemned the assault, stressing that journalists play a crucial role in keeping the public informed during emergencies. Civil society groups have also called on authorities to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State chapter has strongly condemned the violence, describing it as “an assault on press freedom and democracy.” In a statement, the union urged security agencies to not only safeguard journalists at work but also prosecute those who hinder the media’s constitutional duty.
The fire, which reportedly gutted several floors of the building, caused significant damage to businesses in the area. As at press time, no official casualty figures had been released, but emergency teams confirmed that evacuation efforts were ongoing.
This disturbing incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by journalists in Nigeria, particularly when covering crises and disaster scenes. It also raises questions about the safety measures in place for the press while carrying out their legitimate duties.
