A massive fire outbreak was reported on Tuesday evening near the popular Mandilas Market on Lagos Island, sparking chaos and panic among traders, residents, and passersby in the bustling commercial hub. The inferno, which reportedly started in a nearby building housing shops and offices, quickly spread, raising fears of widespread destruction in one of Lagos’s busiest trade zones.
Eyewitnesses said thick black smoke could be seen billowing from several floors of the affected structure, while traders scrambled to salvage their goods. Many were seen rushing out of the market with bags, cartons, and merchandise in a desperate attempt to minimize losses. The scene soon became chaotic as crowds gathered, with some individuals crying uncontrollably as flames threatened their livelihoods.
Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, arrived promptly at the scene and immediately deployed firefighting trucks and equipment to contain the blaze. Firefighters battled against the flames amid difficulties posed by the narrow, congested streets of the Island and the high density of shops packed with flammable materials such as textiles, electronics, and household goods.
One shop owner, visibly shaken, told reporters: “This is our life. Everything we own is in that shop. If the fire reaches there, we are finished. We don’t know what caused it, but the fear now is losing everything we worked for.”
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) also confirmed its involvement, working alongside fire officials, police, and security operatives to ensure the fire was contained and to prevent looting. Authorities cordoned off the affected area, urging residents to stay calm and allow responders to carry out their duties.
As at press time, the exact cause of the fire had not been established. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that an electrical fault might have triggered the blaze, a recurring challenge in Lagos markets where poor wiring and overloading of power sources remain common.
The Mandilas Market area, famous for its wide range of electronics, fashion, and general merchandise, is one of Lagos Island’s busiest commercial zones. The proximity of shops and the sheer volume of trade activities in the area raised concerns that the fire could spread rapidly if not brought under control.
Social media has since been flooded with disturbing video clips showing towering flames and frantic traders shouting for help. Nigerians online have expressed sympathy for those affected while also calling on authorities to enforce stricter safety regulations in markets across the state.
The Lagos State Government has assured that a full investigation will be conducted once the fire is completely put out, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expected to visit the scene. Officials also stressed the importance of insurance for traders to mitigate the devastating impact of such disasters.
For now, the priority remains on extinguishing the fire, safeguarding lives, and minimizing property loss in one of the city’s most critical trading centers.
