Abuja, Nigeria — In a sudden development, the Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Day parade that was to mark Nigeria’s 65th anniversary this October 1.
Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), disclosed the decision in a statement on Monday evening.
He clarified that the cancellation in no way diminishes the significance of the occasion, and that the government remains committed to celebrating the milestone “with dignity and enthusiasm.”
According to the statement, all other programmes scheduled for the Independence Anniversary will proceed as planned.
The government also expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, and extended appreciation to Nigerians, diplomatic community members, and invited guests for their understanding and cooperation.
Originally, the parade along with the presidential broadcast were to take place on Wednesday morning as part of the day’s formal ceremonies.
While the parade has been cancelled, the day itself remains a public holiday, and other events marking Nigeria’s independence will still go ahead.
As of now, the government has not publicly elaborated on the specific reason(s) behind the cancellation.
