Heavy rainfall on Monday morning has caused massive flooding in the Maryland area of Lagos State, leaving major roads submerged and paralyzing movement for motorists and pedestrians.
The downpour, which lasted for several hours, overwhelmed the drainage systems, leading to severe waterlogging across the busy Maryland axis and adjoining streets. Eyewitnesses reported that vehicles were trapped in the floodwaters, while commuters were forced to wade through knee-deep water to reach their destinations.
Business owners around the popular Maryland Mall and adjoining markets also lamented losses, as shops and stalls were inundated. Some residents were seen trying to salvage goods and personal belongings from the rising water.
The flooding brought traffic on Ikorodu Road, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and other adjoining routes to a near standstill, with many motorists abandoning their vehicles to seek safety.
Residents have expressed frustration, blaming the incident on poor drainage infrastructure and government’s failure to find a lasting solution to recurring floods in Lagos. “Every heavy rain turns this place into a river. We suffer year after year, yet nothing changes,” a resident lamented.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were seen on ground monitoring the situation, with an appeal to residents to remain cautious and avoid flooded areas.
The incident has once again raised questions about Lagos’ preparedness for the rainy season, as experts warn of more devastating floods if urgent action is not taken.
