BREAKING NEWS: Bill Gates Raises Alarm Over Child Mortality in Northern Nigeria
Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has sounded a stark warning over the rising child mortality rates in Northern Nigeria, revealing that newborns in the region face a 15% risk of dying before their fifth birthday.
Gates, who has consistently invested in global health through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasized that the alarming figure underscores the urgent need for stronger health interventions, including improved vaccination coverage, maternal healthcare, and nutrition programs.
According to health experts, the situation is fueled by a combination of poverty, malnutrition, preventable diseases, and weak healthcare systems, which continue to put millions of children at risk. Gates stressed that without coordinated efforts from government, international partners, and local communities, the tragedy of avoidable child deaths will persist.
“This is not just a statistic; it represents real children whose lives can be saved with the right policies and investments,” Gates said, urging Nigeria to prioritize maternal and child health as a national emergency.
Northern Nigeria, particularly rural areas, continues to record some of the highest infant and under-five mortality rates in the world, despite progress in other parts of the country.
Health organizations have welcomed Gates’ intervention, calling it a reminder that global support, improved infrastructure, and sustained funding are critical to reversing the trend.
