Effective September 1, 2025, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will substantially increase the application fees for standard Nigerian passports issued within the country, under a newly announced fee structure aimed at bolstering the document’s integrity and sustainability.
In a press statement released on August 28, 2025 and signed by ACI AS Akinlabi, NIS’s Service Public Relations Officer, the updated rates specify that:
- The 32-page standard passport, valid for five years, will now cost ₦100,000.
- The 64-page standard passport, offering ten years of validity, will be priced at ₦200,000.
These increases apply only to passport applications made within Nigeria. Fees for Nigerians applying from abroad (the diaspora) remain unchanged: $150 for a 32-page passport and $230 for a 64-page passport.
According to NIS, the hike is aimed at maintaining the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while supporting the sustained delivery of passport services.
This marks a second significant increase within just one year. On September 1, 2024, passport fees were already raised — from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 for the 32-page booklet, and from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 for the 64-page version.
The latest doubling of rates has sparked widespread public concern. In particular, educators and lecturers have voiced frustration, arguing that the sharp increase poses a serious barrier to academic travel and research opportunities.
