The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has issued a strong demand to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), calling for the immediate reversal of the suspension imposed on a ValueJet captain and first officer following a high-profile disruption at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, which involved renowned Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.
The controversy stems from an incident earlier this month in which operations at the Abuja airport were briefly disrupted during a ValueJet flight that had the Fuji icon on board. Details of the disruption remain partially unclear, but multiple reports indicate that an onboard misunderstanding and subsequent passenger management issues triggered heightened security and operational interventions, leading to significant delays and drawing public attention.
In the aftermath, the NCAA moved swiftly to suspend both the captain and the first officer of the affected ValueJet flight, citing preliminary findings that allegedly pointed to procedural lapses in handling the situation. The aviation regulator stated that the suspension was necessary pending a full investigation, to ensure that safety and operational standards were not compromised.
However, NAAPE has now waded into the matter, condemning what it describes as a “hasty and unfair disciplinary action” against the flight crew. “We maintain that flight crew members operate under strict protocols and are trained to manage situations within the limits of aviation safety and regulations,” NAAPE’s statement read. “From the information available to us, the captain and first officer acted professionally and within the bounds of standard operating procedures. It is therefore unjust to suspend them without conclusively determining fault.”
NAAPE further stressed that pilots and engineers already face enormous pressure in their roles, and that scapegoating them in high-profile incidents could undermine morale within the aviation sector. The union has urged the NCAA to reinstate the ValueJet crew immediately while continuing its investigation, warning that prolonged punitive measures without proof could damage the careers of highly skilled professionals and erode trust in regulatory fairness.
The association also used the opportunity to call for improved incident management policies, better communication channels between flight crew and ground authorities, and enhanced training for handling high-profile passengers whose presence on flights can create unique operational challenges.
Meanwhile, representatives of K1 De Ultimate have remained largely silent on the matter, neither confirming nor denying details of the disruption. Sources close to the musician insist that the incident has been exaggerated and that he played no direct role in any operational breach.
As the NCAA continues its investigation, public opinion remains divided. Some believe the suspension is a necessary step to uphold aviation safety, while others see it as an overreach that unfairly targets the pilots. NAAPE’s intervention has now intensified the pressure on the NCAA to clarify its stance and act swiftly to either justify or rescind its decision.
With the aviation sector already under scrutiny over safety compliance, regulatory impartiality, and passenger management practices, the outcome of this case could set a precedent for how Nigeria’s airspace authorities handle similar incidents in the future.
