A U.S. court in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, has sentenced 37-year-old Nicholas Giroux to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the brutal murd3r of Nigerian-American professional boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi, who was killed in a violent attack that shocked the local community and the Nigerian diaspora in the United States.
According to court documents, the tragic incident occurred after a heated altercation escalated into violence, leading to the untimely death of Olugbemi, a rising sportsman remembered for his strength in the boxing ring and his deep connection to his Nigerian roots. Prosecutors described the attack as “cold-blooded and intentional”, urging the judge to impose the maximum penalty.
During sentencing, the presiding judge emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating that Giroux showed a reckless disregard for human life and must face the consequences of his actions. The additional 20-year sentence will run consecutively with the life term, ensuring that Giroux remains behind bars for the rest of his life.
