The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted and arrested a widow in Lagos for attempting to traffic illicit drugs using a shocking method — disguising herself with a fake pregnancy bump filled with cocaine. The dramatic arrest, which has since attracted nationwide attention, highlights the desperate and increasingly creative tactics employed by drug traffickers in Nigeria.
According to NDLEA officials, the suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigations, was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport as she attempted to board a flight to a foreign destination. On closer inspection, officers discovered that her “baby bump” was in fact carefully crafted to conceal packs of cocaine strapped tightly to her body.
Spokesperson of the NDLEA explained that the woman had resorted to the act after reportedly struggling financially following the death of her husband. However, authorities maintained that desperation could not justify crime, stressing that the agency remains committed to dismantling drug cartels and bringing traffickers, regardless of their status, to justice.
The incident has since gone viral on social media, with Nigerians expressing both shock and anger at the audacity of the act. While some sympathized with the woman’s plight as a widow, many condemned the move, pointing out the grave dangers of drug trafficking to Nigeria’s international reputation and the serious consequences for those caught.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance against narcotics smuggling, emphasizing that traffickers will continue to face the full weight of the law. He also urged Nigerians, especially women and young people, not to allow themselves to be lured into dangerous criminal ventures by cartels promising quick financial gains.
The widow is expected to face prosecution under Nigeria’s stringent drug laws, and if convicted, could be handed a lengthy prison sentence. The NDLEA further confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify her sponsors and any accomplices who may be connected to the trafficking network.
This latest arrest once again underscores the unrelenting efforts of the NDLEA to curb drug smuggling in the country and the extent traffickers are willing to go in their bid to evade law enforcement.
