The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent public alert to Nigerians regarding the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets in markets across the country. The agency revealed that the genuine manufacturers of the product, Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, officially stopped producing Cowbell “Our Milk” in September 2023, replacing it with an upgraded product now branded as Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.”
According to NAFDAC, any Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet currently being sold is fake, illegal, and potentially dangerous for human consumption. The regulatory body emphasized that counterfeiters have exploited the popularity of the Cowbell brand to deceive unsuspecting consumers by flooding local shops and open markets with the banned variant.
In a statement, NAFDAC warned:
“Consumers are strongly advised to refrain from purchasing or consuming Cowbell ‘Our Milk’ in the 12g sachet form. Promasidor Nigeria Ltd has discontinued production since September 2023. The presence of such products in circulation is an indication of counterfeiting, and Nigerians must remain vigilant to avoid health risks.”
The agency further highlighted that counterfeit dairy products often do not meet required safety standards, exposing consumers—especially children and vulnerable groups—to severe health risks ranging from food poisoning to malnutrition. NAFDAC has also assured the public that its enforcement officers are actively conducting nationwide raids to seize fake stocks and bring perpetrators to justice.
Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, makers of the popular Cowbell brand, confirmed the change in product line, explaining that Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness” was introduced to provide Nigerians with better quality, improved taste, and enhanced nutritional value. The company also reiterated that it does not produce any Cowbell “Our Milk” sachet after September 2023.
The development has sparked mixed reactions from consumers. While many expressed anger over counterfeiters exploiting trusted household brands, others called on NAFDAC to intensify market surveillance to protect families who rely on milk products for daily nourishment.
Stakeholders in the dairy industry have equally welcomed the move, noting that the fight against counterfeit goods will help restore consumer confidence in locally available nutritional products.
NAFDAC urged the public to report suspicious Cowbell “Our Milk” sachets found in circulation via its official phone lines, email, or the Med-Safety App for swift regulatory action.
