Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, advising him not to visit Edo State without proper security clearance.
The governor’s statement comes amidst reports that Obi is planning a tour across several southern states, including Edo, as part of his renewed grassroots engagement efforts. However, Governor Okpebholo made it clear that such visits must adhere to established protocols, especially in light of recent security concerns in the state.
“No political figure, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to enter Edo State for political activities without prior security clearance and coordination with state authorities,” the governor said during a press briefing in Benin City on Friday.
He emphasized that the directive is not targeted at any individual or party but is part of a broader security framework designed to ensure peace, stability, and public safety in Edo State.
Sources close to the state government suggest that the move may also be linked to growing political tension in the build-up to the 2024 governorship election in Edo. Obi’s planned visit is seen as potentially energizing the Labour Party’s base in the state, which has unsettled some local political camps.
The Labour Party is yet to officially respond to the governor’s remarks, but political analysts believe the statement could fuel further tensions between the state government and opposition figures.
