In a rare diplomatic gesture, the United States Mission in Nigeria has temporarily closed its embassy in Abuja and consulate in Lagos today, July 15, 2025, in honor of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London.
The announcement was made via an official statement released by the U.S. Mission earlier this morning. According to the statement, the closure is a mark of deep respect for the late Nigerian leader and recognition of his significant role in shaping U.S.-Nigeria relations during his tenure.
“Today, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will suspend all services to honor the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a respected statesman and longtime partner of the United States. We stand with the people of Nigeria in this moment of mourning,” the statement read.
The U.S. and Nigeria have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties, and Buhari played a critical role in strengthening security cooperation, trade partnerships, and democratic values during his two-term civilian presidency from 2015 to 2023.
Flags at the U.S. diplomatic facilities in Nigeria were also seen flying at half-mast, and embassy staff held a moment of silence in memory of the late president.
