A somber wave swept through Katsina State today as the body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in his hometown of Daura for burial. The late leader, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness, has been returned to Nigerian soil amid national mourning and global condolences.
The presidential aircraft carrying Buhari’s body touched down at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina at exactly 10:45 a.m., where a solemn but orderly reception awaited. The casket, draped in the Nigerian flag, was received by a high-powered delegation led by Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, alongside military officers, religious leaders, and members of the late president’s family.
Crowds gathered along the road from Katsina to Daura, waving flags, chanting prayers, and expressing sorrow as the motorcade made its way to the family residence. Many were seen weeping openly, reflecting the depth of emotion felt across the northern region and beyond.
The late president will be buried today in accordance with Islamic rites at his ancestral home in Daura. Religious leaders have confirmed that the Janazah (funeral prayer) will be held at the central mosque in Daura before the final interment.
Among those present for the ceremony are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and several state governors, traditional rulers, and foreign envoys. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently on a diplomatic trip to the African Union summit, has declared seven days of national mourning, directing all flags to fly at half-mast and urging Nigerians to reflect on the life and contributions of the late president.
A Leader Remembered
Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82 at the time of his passing, was a towering figure in Nigerian politics and military history. He first came to power as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015, serving two terms until 2023. Known for his anti-corruption stance, austere leadership style, and commitment to national security, Buhari remained a polarizing but impactful leader.
