In a bold move toward sustainable energy adoption, the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the construction of a ₦10 billion solar mini-grid project to provide uninterrupted clean power to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The project, which is part of the government’s broader energy transition strategy, aims to reduce reliance on diesel generators, cut down carbon emissions, and set an example for green energy initiatives nationwide.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Power, the solar mini-grid will generate several megawatts of electricity and is designed to meet the energy demands of the entire presidential complex, including residential, administrative, and security facilities.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the project as a “national symbol of commitment to renewable energy and energy security.”
“This is not just about powering Aso Rock. It is about leading by example. Nigeria must show that we are serious about clean energy, climate responsibility, and cost-effective infrastructure,” the Minister said.
The project is being developed in partnership with local and international renewable energy firms and is expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months. Once operational, the solar grid is projected to save billions in annual fuel and maintenance costs currently incurred through conventional power sources.
Critics, however, have raised questions about the timing and cost of the project, especially amidst rising inflation and national debt. Still, government officials insist the long-term benefits outweigh the initial investment.
Environmental experts and civil society groups have lauded the initiative, urging the government to replicate similar solar projects across federal institutions, rural communities, and healthcare facilities.
The Aso Rock solar project marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of energy diversification and a more resilient, eco-friendly power infrastructure.
